Board Governance

The activities of the Chapter are under the general direction and authority of a Board of Directors.

The Board has thirteen Directors elected by plurality at the Annual Meeting of the chapter.

  • Twelve directors who each serve a 3-year term (maximum of two consecutive terms)
  • One director who serves a 2-year term and must be a student at a college or university. This director automatically becomes the Chair of the Student Committee

The length of term for all newly elected or re-elected regular board members is 3 years, and for any newly elected student board member, 2 years.

Directors who serve as Chairperson will have 1 year added to their 3 year elected term, with the maximum length of an elected term being 4 years (one added year). A Director will serve as Past Chairperson in the year following their year as Chairperson, but only while serving one of the 3 or 4 years of their duly elected term. In the event that this person is ineligible or unable to serve as Past Chairperson, another current Director, preferably a previous Chairperson, may be appointed to this position by the Board of Directors

Each year, the Board of Directors elects a Chairperson and a Vice-Chairperson. The previous year's Chairperson takes the role of Immediate Past Chair. The Chairperson assigns portfolios to other directors as necessary. Typical portfolios include:

  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Advocacy Committee Chair
  • Audit Committee Chair
  • Board Development Committee Chair
  • Communications Committee Chair
  • Conference Committee Chair
  • Membership Committee Chair
  • Nominations Committee Chair
  • Professional Development Committee Chair

Any Chapter member can run for election to the board of directors. Elections are held each year at the Chapter's annual meeting, which is usually held in November. A call for nominations is distributed to members 90 days before the annual meeting in November and must submitted 30 days before the annual meeting. The nomination form must be signed by the nominee and two other members of the Chapter.

Board terms of service begin in January. The Board meets once per month and committees meet at varying times. Any chapter member is welcome to attend a Board or committee meeting, and should contact the Board Chair or relevant committee chair to determine the time and location of the next meeting.
